Volunteering

Have you ever wanted to work with monkeys in their natural rainforest habitat?

We accept volunteers, students and researchers year-round at all of our projects in South America. If you are interested then please read on for more information, and please contact us if you have any questions or would like to participate.

What we do

NPC works on diverse projects in Argentina, Colombia and Peru. All our projects focus on conserving primates and their habitats with a particular focus on community based protection of our flagship species.

Project volunteers are involved in all aspects of our projects. This can include the creation and management of community-run protected areas, scientific investigation, reforestation (using native tree species that are beneficial to humans and wildlife), environmental education, social development, and the fight against the illegal wildlife trade.

Although we began in a small way, working in a single community to protect just one area of forest, NPC has grown and we now work with dozens of local communities in three countries. Despite the increase in our work, we still maintain a local focus, with targeted conservation interventions where most needed. To help us continue to achieve even more, we are always looking for enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers whose presence will allow us to collect data more effectively, help maintain the tree nurseries, and spread our conservation message to more communities. Our work, including the volunteer programme, also provides employment and financial benefits to local communities.

A key component of our work is the fight against the illegal wildlife trade. Volunteers may also assist in the care and transport of rescued wildlife, as well as gathering information for wildlife authorities. This will only be asked of you if you feel comfortable and it is safe to do so.

Who are we looking for?

To be a volunteer you must be able to speak basic Spanish (the better your Spanish, the more you will be able to interact with local people), be able to commit to at least two months (3 months or longer is preferred) and preferably have experience in one of the project’s fields of study: biology, education, sustainable development or reforestation. To apply to be a volunteer, please contact us.

Although experience is preferred, we provide training in field methods in conservation, a window into a career as a conservation biologist and, hopefully, an unforgettable experience!

Contributions

We ask all international volunteers, students, and researchers to pay the costs of their accommodation, food, local travel, and field work (mainly in the case of students and researchers) during their time with us. Your payment donation provides much needed funds to support your participation and helps pay the wages of your local guides who will help you in your work. It also allows us to fund the participation of local students, thus developing in-country capacity for the future of conservation. NO money from this goes towards staff wages or management costs.

For volunteers the cost is £350 (or equivalent in another currency) per month of your participation. Long term volunteers may receive a reduction or waiver after the first 3 months. Student and researcher costs are based on this basic fee but this may vary depending on the specific project being undertaken and any additional equipment or needs.

Detailed information about the activities and working conditions can be found in the volunteer information pack

Help us while travelling

While on your travels, we would like to raise the awareness of a few small steps that could go such a long way in the fight to prevent illegal animal hunting and trafficking:

Do not buy animal products such as:

And the list goes on! It is illegal to buy products on the endangered species list and cruel to the animals.

Do not pay for any activity which exploits wildlife such as:
Do not eat in restaurants that serve bushmeat or with animal skins hanging on the walls.
Don’t buy animals.
It is hard to see live animals at markets, but please don’t be tempted to buy them in order to ‘rescue’ them. This just creates a market and encourages the seller to acquire more for sale. Instead, contact local police, wildlife authorities, or NGOs, and, if you can, explain to the seller that you don’t want to see animals for sale and that they need to remain in the forest with others of their own kind.
Whilst in the forest do not leave litter or disturb natural habitats.
Don’t let guides hunt or catch animals or destroy plants for you. Enjoy nature without disturbing it.
Look for activities where any money you pay goes back into the community.
Rather than booking with companies based abroad that usually charge more despite much of the money not helping the local economy.
