Members of the Cordoba community are interested in declaring a reserve within their territory. The area, known locally as “Venado Verde”, covers 800 ha of tropical pacific rainforest, home to many different species of endemic and threatened fauna, such as the Colombian black spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps rufiventris), the Panamanian night monkey (Aotus zonalis), the white-faced capuchin monkey (Cebus capucinus) and the Baudó guan (Penelope ortoni).
This is a very special area as it lies at the heart of the Chocó biogeographic region, an area facing many threats, including the expansion of illegal coca fields and mining. Despite the adverse conditions, the community has proven its dedication and leadership in conservation by effectively protecting this area and developing tourism and restoration initiatives.
